Formula Reference & Conversion Standards
Officially prescribed formulas for German university admission
1. ECTS Conversion Factor (U)
ECTS credits measure full-time student workload (60 ECTS per year). The conversion factor U from your home credit hours to ECTS is:
Where D is degree duration in years, and CS is the total credits required to graduate.
Example: For a 4-year degree (D=4) with CS=133 credits: U = (60 × 4) / 133 = 1.80. A 4-credit module yields 4 × (240 / 133) = 7.22 ECTS.
2. Modified Bavarian Formula (Bayerische Formel)
Mandated by the Standing Conference of Ministers of Education (KMK) and used by TU Munich (TUM), RWTH Aachen, and other German universities:
Where Nmax is the maximum possible grade in your university, Nmin is the minimum passing score, and Nd is your attained score. 1.0 is the highest possible grade and 4.0 is the passing mark.
